  • Camponotus nicobarensis is a very popular beginners’ exotic species from China they love everything sugary. They have a beautiful red/brown colouration which adds to their demand amongst ant enthusiast. They tend to be a nocturnal ant species, but I do find them active throughout the day. Unlike European species of the Camponotus genus they tend to be fast growing and have seen footage of colonies with 100s and 1000s of workers in a couple of years of keeping.

note: Colonies with workers also have brood :)

In the wild this species tends to nest inside cavities on the ground and generally on the canopy floor in tropical forests.

Like most ants when agitated they will move at quick speeds and become aggressive they are also known to make a tapping noise which can be heard by humans but this would not keep you awake at night.
