A Visually stunning North American harvester ant and the perfect introduction to the fascinating world of US desert species. Please note we are selling this species in pairs to increase success rate and colony growth at an excellent price.
Pogonomyrmex californicus is a highly active, seed-harvesting ant native to the warm, sandy regions of the southwestern United States. Renowned for their relentless foraging behaviour, these ants are constantly on the move, forming impressive trails as they search for seeds and insect prey. Their energetic nature makes them one of the most rewarding species to observe in captivity.
In the wild, colonies inhabit open desert and scrubland habitats, constructing deep nests that help maintain stable humidity levels and access moisture below the surface. Nest entrances are often surrounded by distinctive rings of loose sand, creating an impressive natural appearance.
One of the most exciting features of this species is its facultative polygyny. While some colonies are founded by a single queen, others naturally contain multiple queens working together. Multi-queen colonies often grow faster, achieve larger worker populations, and offer an added level of security should one queen be lost.
Unlike many other harvester ants, P. californicus does not produce "ant bread." Instead, they require a constant supply of seeds, with chia seeds being particularly well accepted. They generally consume significantly more seed than comparable Messor species.
These ants are extremely active, highly defensive, and possess a potent sting. Their behaviour makes them a fantastic species for experienced keepers seeking a dynamic and engaging colony.
